Jordan Telecom moves to the Integrated Licensing and Regulating Regime
Amman, 6 May 2007
Signing of the agreement for the integrated regime of licensing for Jordan Telecom convened today at the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (TRC) premises. The new signed individual license format comes in accordance with the TRC’s move towards the integrated licensing and regulatory regime.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Ahmad Hiasat, the CEO and Chairman of the TRC Board of Commissioners, and Mr. Mickael Ghossein, the CEO of Jordan Telecom Company. The ceremony was attended by members of the Commissioners Board and a number of Jordan Telecom and TRC officials.
Dr. Hiasat asserted that Jordan Telecom’s move to the Integrated Licensing and Regulatory Regime has been voluntary, after the Company concluded all necessary pre-requirements. The new regulatory framework endeavors to remove all constraints, on services provided or means of provision, related to the limiting definitions of the service and type of used technology.
The TRC has adopted in accordance with the regulatory framework a direction that licenses all types of services in the fixed telecom sub-sector, in a way, that would allow it to adopt a less interfering role while regulating the market, and would give it the scope to lessen the extent of focusing on the implementation of license provisions, towards a better focus on achieving real competition goals.
For his part, Jordan Telecom Group’s CEO, Mr. Mickael Ghossein, said: “Jordan Telecom decided to move to the Full Integrated Licensing and Regulatory Regime voluntarily, after it concluded all pre- requirements. By virtue of this agreement, Jordan Telecom will be able to continue building public telecom networks, and offer its distinguished and numerous services by using scarce resources.”
Ghossein added: “Jordan Telecom has endeavored since its launch in the local market to build a strong and advanced fixed telecom infrastructure in the Kingdom, by using the most advanced telecom technologies. Due to the fact that Jordan Telecom is a member of the France Telecom Group, it can easily derive on the necessary ICT support that the giant telecom provides, in turn distinguishing itself to hold a prominent leading position, and to continue to provide competitive services and technologies, thus catering for the needs of different segments of the Jordanian society.”
Mr. Ghossein further added that Jordan Telecom invested over JD 180 million dinars on its network during the period (2000 – 2006). Ghossein explained that Jordan Telecom is considered the backbone of many telecom companies operating in the Kingdom.
He said; Jordan Telecom has contributed in the past five years towards supporting national economy directly, through the creation of work opportunities, and injecting the public treasury with revenues.
